These guides are about labels and prices. We do not say that any specific product is good for the environment or holds a certification, and a claim on a package is worth checking.

Five rules for reading green claims

  1. Prefer specific claims. Recycled content, plastic-free packaging and named certifications say more than eco-friendly or green.
  2. Check where it ends up. Compostable and recyclable claims depend on what your area accepts.
  3. Know what a certification covers. FSC, EPA Safer Choice and USDA Certified Biobased each describe one thing.
  4. Compare unit prices and break-even for reusables.
  5. Buy what you will use. The lowest-impact product is often the one you do not throw away unused.
