Reading eco claims on diapers

  • Plant-based: not a defined term. It can describe some materials in a diaper and not the whole product. Look at the ingredients or materials listed.
  • Chlorine-free: describes how a material was bleached. It is a specific statement, and it says nothing about how the diaper will fit or perform.
  • Biodegradable and compostable: be careful. Most diapers end up in a landfill, where little breaks down quickly. A compostable claim usually depends on access to a facility that accepts the product, which is rare for diapers. The FTC's Green Guides ask for clear qualification of these claims.
  • Fragrance-free and lotion-free: tell you what was left out. Check the ingredient list.
  • Certifications: described generally in the note below, without naming any product as holding one.

Cloth, hybrid or disposable

Cloth diapers cost more up front and add washing, and the overall cost depends on how many diapers you buy and how you wash them. Hybrid systems use a washable cover with disposable or compostable inserts. Disposable diapers are the most convenient. The right choice depends on your time, budget and local laundry options, and your pediatrician can answer questions about your baby.

Our angle: size changes and the fit-first rule

A cheaper diaper that leaks costs more in laundry and wasted diapers, and a diaper that is too small or too big does not fit well. Babies move through sizes quickly, so buy the size your baby wears now, and at most one size ahead. Compare price per diaper within that size. Eco-focused diapers often cost more per diaper, so check whether a subscription or a larger pack lowers the unit price.

  1. Check the size and weight range on the package against your baby.
  2. Divide the price by the number of diapers for each size.
  3. Try a small pack before you stock up.

Buying tips

  • Avoid big stockpiles. Babies grow, and the size you need changes.
  • Compare subscriptions with your usual store's unit price.
  • Check the packaging for specific claims, like plastic-free wrapping.
