What the label should tell you
Organic is about how the fiber was grown. It does not tell you how a garment fits or how it was dyed, so read the listing details.
- Fiber content: organic cotton, a blend or a different fiber.
- Certifier name: look at the certifier's own site to see what its mark means for fiber, processing or both.
- Care instructions: some babywear shrinks, so read the temperature guidance.
- Size and age range: sizes vary between makers.
Design details that matter for babies
Inspect any new garment before dressing a baby, and stop using anything with a loose snap or button. Ask a pediatrician about concerns with skin or clothing.
- Snaps and zippers: easier for diaper changes, but check that they are secured and flat.
- Tags: some are printed on the inside to avoid a loose tag.
- Drawstrings and loose trims: check the maker's guidance on age and safety.
- Footed styles: check the fit around the toes.
Sizing and washing
- Wash before first wear, following the care label.
- Buy a few sizes ahead only if the return policy is generous.
- Keep a small stock of onesies, sleepers and a few outer layers.
Our angle: cost per wear, with fast outgrowing in mind
Babies outgrow sizes quickly, so cost per wear can be high. To compare, estimate the number of wears per size, then divide the price by that. A multipack of onesies often brings the per-piece figure down, and secondhand or hand-me-down pieces add savings. Be aware that a pack may include mixed sizes.
- Compare price per piece, not per pack.
- Check the maker's size chart, not just the age label.
- Skip items that need hand washing or ironing if you do not want that chore.
Gift angle and claims
Gifts in organic cotton are common for baby showers. Pick the next size up, and include a gift receipt. See Christmas gift ideas by budget, and our guides to gentle baby wash and organic cotton sheets. Under the FTC Green Guides, eco claims should be specific.
