Reading the labels

  • Organic cotton: usually describes how the cotton was grown. Check whether it says organic or made with organic cotton, since they are not the same.
  • GOTS and OEKO-TEX: third-party labels. GOTS is a standard for organic textiles, and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a test for certain substances. We describe them generally and do not say that any specific product has either.
  • GSM: grams per square meter, a measure of how heavy and dense the fabric is. Higher is heavier, but it is not a quality score.
  • Pile and weave: loops (terry), waffle or flat weave each feel and dry differently.
  • Fiber length: long-staple cotton is often described as better. Check what the maker says and how it is supported.

Our angle: GSM, drying speed and durability

A heavier towel feels plush and takes longer to dry, which matters in a humid bathroom or if you hang towels in a small space. A lighter towel dries faster and packs smaller, which suits gyms and travel. Neither is better. The right GSM depends on how you use the towel. For value, compare cost per year: divide the price by the number of years you expect it to last. Look at the stitching and the warranty, since a towel that frays quickly costs more per year.

  1. Decide how you use the towel: bath, hand, gym or beach.
  2. Match GSM and weave to that use.
  3. Divide the price by the years you expect it to last.

Care

  • Wash new towels before use, and follow the care label.
  • Fabric softener can reduce how absorbent towels feel, so many people leave it out. See our fabric softener guide.
  • Do not overload the washer or dryer.
  • Hang or dry towels fully, so they do not stay damp.

Buying tips

  • Buy a single towel first, and add a set later.
  • Check the size, since bath towels and sheets vary.
  • Check the return policy, since feel is personal.
  • A neutral color hides wear and is easy to match.
