Types of pads

  • Disposable pads: layers of absorbent material with a waterproof backing, usually plastic. Low in price per pad.
  • Plant-based or compostable-claim pads: some use plant-based materials. Check what the maker says about the backing and about composting, since pads with waste on them may not be accepted by composting programs.
  • Washable pads: fabric layers that you launder. Higher in price at first, and the cost per use falls with each wash.
  • Grass or turf trays: some products offer real or artificial grass for pets. Check the care instructions.

What to look for

For training advice, ask your vet or a certified trainer. If your pet has frequent accidents, changes in urination or other concerns, call your vet.

  • Size: choose one that fits your dog's size, so that the pad catches what it is meant to catch.
  • Absorbency and leak protection: check what the label says, and watch how the pad performs.
  • Scent or attractant: some disposable pads are made with a scent meant to attract a dog. Check the ingredients and whether it suits your household.
  • Edges and grip: a pad that slides is a problem. Some pads have adhesive strips or non-slip backing.
  • Disposal: used pads usually go in the trash. Follow your local rules, and do not flush them.

Our angle: break-even and the cost of washing

Divide the price of a pack of disposable pads by the count to get the price per pad, then estimate how many you use per week. For washable pads, divide the price by the number of times you expect to use one, which depends on its stated lifespan or your own experience. Add a little for water, detergent and the time of washing. You usually need several washable pads so that one is clean while another is in use, and that raises the upfront cost. Break-even depends on the number of uses per week, so use your own numbers.

  1. Divide the disposable pack price by the pad count.
  2. Estimate your weekly use, and the weekly cost.
  3. Divide the washable set price by that weekly cost for the break-even in weeks.
