Common materials

Natural does not have a single definition for litter. Read the ingredient list and what the maker says about the material.

  • Clay: the traditional choice. Heavy and often dusty, and made from mined material.
  • Pine: made from pine wood, often as pellets or crumble. Has a natural smell, which some cats like and some do not.
  • Corn and wheat: plant-based, usually clumping. Check the label for added scents.
  • Walnut shell: made from ground shells. Check for nut allergies in your household.
  • Paper: made from recycled paper, often as pellets, and low in dust.
  • Tofu or soy: plant-based, sold in pellets. Check the label for details on flushing and disposal.

Flushing and disposal

Some litters are labeled flushable. Many veterinarians and manufacturers advise against flushing cat litter in general, and local rules and plumbing differ, so check with your water authority and your plumber, especially if you have a septic system. Follow the instructions on the package, and when in doubt, put used litter in the trash.

Switching litters

  • Cats can be particular about litter. Change gradually by mixing the new litter with the old.
  • Watch your cat's behavior. If your cat stops using the box, or you notice a change in urination, call your vet.
  • If you or your cat have a respiratory concern, ask your vet or doctor about dust.

Our angle: cost per week, because weight misleads

A pound of lightweight litter fills more of the box than a pound of clay, so price per pound can be misleading in both directions. Instead, track how long a bag lasts for your cats. Divide the price by the number of weeks it lasts. Count how many cats use the box, how deep you fill it, and how often you change it. Then compare products by cost per week. Also include the cost of any bags or accessories the litter requires.

  1. Note the date you open a bag and the date it runs out.
  2. Divide the price by the number of weeks.
  3. Compare cost per week across materials.
