This page explains labels and prices. It is not medical advice. Please ask your child's pediatrician about bathing, products and any concerns about your baby's skin.

Reading a baby wash label

  • Tear-free. A maker's description that the formula is meant to sting less if it reaches the eyes. It is not a guarantee, so keep wash away from the eyes.
  • Fragrance-free and dye-free. No added fragrance or colorants. Check the ingredient list.
  • Hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested, pediatrician-tested. These phrases are not guarantees. Treat them as hints.
  • Age range. Check that the product is made for your baby's age.
  • Two-in-one. A wash that is also a shampoo. Compare its price per ounce with separate products.

Comparing prices

  1. Find the fluid ounces on the bottle.
  2. Divide the price by that number to get the price per ounce.
  3. Compare bottles, refills and multipacks on that basis.
  • Small first. Buy a small bottle before you stock up.
  • Avoid big stockpiles. Babies grow quickly and the products you need change.
  • Check expiry and storage on the label.

Safety

Never leave a baby alone in or near water. Keep products out of reach of children and follow the label. If a product seems to bother your baby's skin, stop using it and ask your pediatrician.
