Common fills in plain terms

  • Wool: a firmer, springy fill. Check the care instructions, since many need spot cleaning.
  • Natural latex: made from rubber tree sap. Check the listing for latex content, since people with a latex allergy should ask a doctor.
  • Kapok: a plant fiber from seed pods, soft and light.
  • Cotton: a flat or lofted fill, often washable.
  • Down and feathers: soft and light. Read the origin and any responsible down wording on the certifier's site.

Covers and labels

The cover is as important as the fill. Look for cotton or linen covers, zip closures and washable options. If you see organic, certified or natural, check the certifier's own site for what it covers. Natural is not a defined term for bedding, and under the FTC Green Guides general green claims should be specific.

  1. Check the fill and the cover separately.
  2. Check whether the pillow can be washed or only spot cleaned.
  3. Check the trial or return policy.

Fit and sleeping position

Pillow height and firmness are a matter of comfort. Side sleepers often prefer a taller pillow and back sleepers a lower one, but people differ. If you have neck or sleep concerns, ask a doctor rather than relying on a listing.

Our angle: cost per night

Divide the price by the number of nights you expect to use it. A higher priced pillow with a long trial and a washable cover can still be reasonable. Compare queen and standard sizes carefully, and compare price per pillow in multipacks. We do not state how long any pillow lasts.

  • Check whether a cover or protector is included.
  • Take trial periods seriously and read return costs.
  • Buy one first, then match a second.
