Latex allergy first
Natural rubber comes from rubber tree sap and may be sold as natural latex. Many listings include a latex warning. If you or someone in your household has a latex allergy, ask a doctor before buying and read the listing. Some mats use other materials, such as PER, TPE, cork or jute blends, so check the label.
Specs to compare
- Thickness: thinner mats feel closer to the floor and are lighter. Thicker mats cushion knees but can be less stable.
- Surface: smooth, textured or a cork or suede-like top layer.
- Weight: rubber mats are heavier than many foam mats, which matters if you carry yours.
- Size: standard length may be short for tall people. Check the dimensions.
- Smell: new rubber mats can smell for a while. Check reviews for mention.
Eco wording
Terms such as eco mat or biodegradable should be specific under the FTC Green Guides. A mat with a rubber base can still have a different top layer, so read the parts list. If a rubber source certifier is named, check the certifier's own site. Biodegradable claims are often disputed, so we do not state how a mat breaks down.
Care
- Read the maker's care guide.
- Wipe with a damp cloth and let it air dry.
- Keep away from direct sun and heat, as many makers advise.
- Roll with the top surface out or in, as the maker suggests.
Our angle: cost per year
Mats that cost more may be used for several years. Divide the price by the years you expect to use it, then divide by the number of sessions for a cost per session. A thicker mat needs more storage and carrying effort, which has value too. We do not state how long any mat lasts, so use the warranty and return policy.
- Check whether a strap is included.
- A cheaper mat can still be enough if you practice rarely.
- Compare weight per square foot if you carry it.
Gift angle
A mat is a bulky but useful gift. Check thickness preferences first. See Christmas gift ideas by budget, and our guides to reusable water bottles and natural air fresheners and candles.
