Compostable, biodegradable or regular plastic
- Compostable: the bag is designed to break down under composting conditions. That is a statement about the bag, not about whether your local system accepts pet waste.
- Biodegradable: a vague word. The FTC's Green Guides ask that biodegradable claims be qualified, since it is unclear how long breakdown takes or where it happens.
- Regular plastic: strong and inexpensive. Some bags include recycled content, which is a specific claim you can check.
- Certification: some compostable products carry a third-party mark, and the package should name the program behind it.
Our angle: the rules for pet waste are different
Pet waste can carry germs, and many composting programs do not accept it, even in compostable bags. Some places accept pet waste in landfill trash only, some have special programs, and some say to flush it in the toilet without the bag. Home composting of dog waste is usually advised against for food gardens. Check with your local waste or public health authority before choosing a bag for its compostability. If you cannot compost it, a compostable bag that ends up in a landfill may not break down as the label suggests, so a stronger, regular or recycled-content bag may be the more practical choice.
Strength and fit
- Check the thickness or strength. A bag that tears is more costly than a stronger bag that costs a bit more.
- Look at the bag size and the opening, since big dogs may need larger bags.
- Check whether the roll fits your dispenser, and whether the bags are easy to separate and open.
- Scented bags add a fragrance. Check the label if you or your dog are sensitive.
Comparing prices
- Keep a few spare bags in your coat and car.
- Throw away bags in a proper bin, not in the street or woods.
- Divide the price by the number of bags to get the price per bag.
- Compare bags of similar size and strength.
- Check bulk and subscription prices against the single pack.
