This page explains labels and prices. It does not say that any product will suit your scalp or hair. If your scalp is painful, very red or getting worse, ask a dermatologist or doctor.
Reading a shampoo label
- Sulfate-free. The shampoo does not use sulfate cleansing agents. This describes the formula and does not guarantee a gentler feel.
- Fragrance-free and dye-free. No added fragrance or colorants. Some people with a sensitive scalp start here.
- Unscented. Not the same as fragrance-free. Check the ingredient list.
- Color-safe and for specific hair types. These are marketing categories. Match them to your hair, not just the label.
- Hypoallergenic and dermatologist-tested. Not guarantees.
- Eco claims. See our eco-friendly hand soap guide for how to read general environmental words and certifications.
Conditioner
Conditioner is usually applied to the lengths of the hair, rinsed out, and is optional for many people. If you use one, pick it by your hair and compare it by price per ounce. Two-in-one products are convenient, but compare their price per ounce to buying separately.
Comparing prices
- Find the fluid ounces on the bottle.
- Divide the price by that number.
- Compare shampoo and conditioner, bottles and refills on the same basis.
- Concentrated formulas may last longer if you use less each wash.
- Refill pouches and liter-size bottles are often lower per ounce.
- Bars are compact. Compare the price per bar and how many washes you get.
- Try a small size first before you stock up.
