This page explains how to read labels and compare prices. It does not say any product will suit your skin. If your skin is painful, very red or getting worse, please ask a dermatologist or doctor.
Reading a body wash label
- Fragrance-free. No fragrance ingredients were added. Fragrance is a common trigger for some people.
- Unscented. Not the same thing. It can mean a masking ingredient was used. Check the list for the words fragrance or parfum.
- Dye-free. No colorants were added.
- Soap-free. Describes the type of cleanser used. It is not a guarantee about how it feels.
- Sulfate-free. The product does not use sulfate cleansing agents. It does not automatically make a body wash gentler.
- Hypoallergenic, dermatologist-tested, pH-balanced. These phrases are not guarantees. Treat them as hints.
Liquid, gel, bar or oil
Liquid and gel washes are easiest to compare by price per ounce. Bars can be good value and use little packaging, but check that the bar is made for body use. Oils and creamy washes can feel richer, and cost more per ounce, so decide whether that is worth it for you.
Comparing prices
- Find the fluid ounces on the label.
- Divide the price by that number to get the price per ounce.
- Compare bottles, refill pouches and multipacks using the same number.
- Refill pouches are often cheaper per ounce, and they can use less packaging. Check what the pouch is made of and whether it can be recycled where you live.
- Large bottles help only if you will use them before the product changes in smell or texture.
- Try a small size first, especially if you have sensitive skin.
Shower habits
Lukewarm water, shorter showers and moisturizing afterward are commonly suggested for dry skin. A dermatologist can give advice for your skin.
