Start with the ordinary things

Parents often say they need nothing and then keep using a worn mug or a thin blanket for ten years. Look around the next time you visit. The things used daily are the ones a better version will improve most.

• A kettle, mug or coffee press they use every morning.
• A blanket or a pair of slippers by the favorite chair.
• A garden tool or work gloves that have seen better years.
• A reading light, a puzzle book or a deck of cards.

Ease of use comes first

A gift that needs a long setup tends to sit in the box. Look for products that work from the first plug-in, with large text on the controls and buttons you can feel. Read the reviews for the words setup, instructions and buttons to see how real owners found it.

For anything with a screen, check the text size options and whether a paper manual is included. Where an app is needed, ask yourself who will help if it does not connect.

Our angle: subscription or one-time

Some gifts keep charging after the first payment, such as streaming plans, app subscriptions and refill programs. Before you buy, look for the renewal terms and write down the date it will start billing. A one-time gift without a recurring fee is simpler for the person receiving it, and the cost is easy to compare.

If you do pick a subscription, tell the parent what it is, how to cancel it and when it renews.

Pooling money with siblings

If a bigger gift is on the list, agree on one item and split the cost among siblings, and name one person to buy it. Everyone saves time, and the parent gets one gift they actually wanted instead of several they did not. Tell the shop or the buyer to include a gift receipt.

When to buy
