Holiday safety for pets

  • Lilies are dangerous for cats. Avoid them in bouquets and arrangements. If a cat chews or eats any part of one, call a vet right away.
  • Poinsettias. Usually cause mild stomach upset if chewed, but keep them out of reach.
  • Tinsel, ribbon and string. Cats and some dogs swallow them, and they can cause a serious blockage. Skip tinsel if you have a cat.
  • The tree. Secure it so it cannot be pulled over. Keep glass ornaments high up, cover or tuck away light cords so pets can't chew them, and don't let pets drink from the tree stand water.
  • People food. Chocolate, xylitol (in some sugar-free sweets and gum), grapes and raisins, onions and fatty scraps can all harm pets, and cooked bones can splinter. Keep plates and trash out of reach.
  • Wrapping. Keep wrapped food gifts, ribbons and gift bags away from pets until opening time.

If you think your pet has eaten something harmful, call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away. This page is about shopping, not medical advice.

Toys

Wand toys, crinkle balls and catnip toys are classics. Put wand toys away after play, since strings are a swallowing hazard.

Costumes and photo props

If you want a holiday picture, a bandana or a small hat is usually enough. Keep it brief, watch for signs of stress, and take it off if your pet is unhappy. The same fit and safety rules apply as at Halloween; see our Pet Halloween guide.

Holiday pet accessories

Avoid anything with dangling parts or small pieces that can be chewed off.
