Costumes
Choice matters more than price here. Popular costumes and children's sizes go first, and a last-minute purchase can mean paying for whatever is left. Order early enough to allow for shipping and a possible exchange, and check the return policy before you open the packaging.
Costumes
If you are buying for a child, check the sizing chart and the fabric. Cheap costumes can run small or itch, so a plain base outfit plus accessories is often more flexible.
Candy
Compare candy by price per ounce, not by bag size. A large "variety" bag can contain many small pieces that look like more than they weigh. Count how many trick-or-treaters you expect last year, add a margin, and buy a little less than you think: leftover candy is easy to eat and hard to return.
Candy and treat bags
Check best-by dates and any allergy information on the label. If you want a non-food option, small toys and stickers work for many households.
Decorations
Lights, inflatables and yard signs get used again, so they are worth buying carefully and storing well. Check the power source (plug-in or battery), whether it is made for outdoor use, and how much space it takes up in storage.
Decorations and lights
A reusable set is usually better value than a themed item you will throw away on November 1.
Pet Halloween
Dressing up a dog or cat is optional, and plenty of pets are happier with a bandana than a full costume. If you do, keep it short, keep it safe, and keep human candy out of reach. Dogs can get seriously ill from chocolate and from xylitol, a sweetener found in some candy and gum. Our Pet Halloween guide covers costumes, treats, toys, photo props and safety, and the pet supplies guide covers everyday food and litter.
After October 31
If you are reading this after Halloween, the sale window has started. Seasonal stock is typically marked down in the first days of November. It is a good time to buy decorations and costumes for next year, as long as you will remember where you stored them. Candy is a worse bet: check the date, and only buy what you will actually eat.
