The usual pattern

  • Back-to-school (summer). Retailers and makers run student and family promotions.
  • Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Wide selection, with the caution below about sale versions.
  • New model launches. When a new generation is announced, the old one is often discounted to clear stock.
  • Education pricing. Many makers offer student or teacher discounts year-round, so check before paying full price.

The catch: sale-only versions

Some laptops sold in the biggest sales are configurations made for the event. They can share a name with a better model while having less memory, less storage or a slower processor. Compare the full model number and the specs, not the name.

What to check before you buy

  • Memory and storage, and whether either can be upgraded later.
  • The processor generation, since newer is not always necessary for your needs.
  • Screen quality, battery life claims and weight, which affect daily use more than raw speed.
  • Warranty and return policy.

Buy now or wait?

If your current laptop is failing, buying now at a decent price beats waiting. If it works fine, set a target and wait for a sale window. We do not track laptop prices yet, so compare the same exact model across a few stores. Check price on Amazon
