Two parts to the claim
FSC certification has two sides. Forest management certification covers the forest itself, and chain-of-custody certification covers the companies that handle the material afterward, so the fiber can be traced to the finished product. A package label depends on both, which is why a company must be certified to use the mark.
Third-party auditors, not the FSC itself, carry out the certification checks. That makes the label a different kind of claim from a brand simply saying its paper is responsibly sourced.
The three label types
Check which wording appears, since they describe different things. A product marked FSC Mix is not the same as one marked FSC 100%, and a recycled label speaks to reclaimed fiber and not to forest management.
- FSC 100%: all the material comes from FSC-certified forests.
- FSC Mix: the material comes from a combination of FSC-certified forests, recycled material and controlled wood sources.
- FSC Recycled: the material is reclaimed, recycled content.
How to verify a label
An FSC label carries a license code. The FSC maintains a public database where you can search a certificate holder, and checking it is the way to confirm that a company is certified and what products its certificate covers. If a package shows a tree logo with no code, or uses vague words such as forest friendly, treat that as marketing, not certification.
Certification is also not a promise about every part of a product. It covers the fiber and the certified chain of custody, so it does not by itself describe the ink, glue, plastic window or packaging that may come with the item.
Using FSC when you shop
For paper goods such as napkins, towels, tissue and notebooks, an FSC label is a useful way to compare sourcing. Pair it with other details like recycled content, bleaching process and what the product is wrapped in. Our eco-friendly paper towels and paper napkins guides show how these labels fit into a broader checklist, and our explainer on recycled content covers the other half of the sourcing story.
