Plastic, paper and bamboo sticks
A cotton swab has two parts: the cotton tip and the stick. Plastic sticks do not break down in a reasonable time. Paper and bamboo sticks are made from plant material, which is why they are often sold as the lower-waste choice.
Some swabs also use adhesive or a coating to hold the tip on, so check the box for what the maker says about the whole swab and not just the stick.
The cotton itself is a plant fiber, and some makers describe it as organic or unbleached. Those words describe how the cotton was grown or processed, so look for a named certification if the claim matters to you, and treat the rest as the seller's description.
What biodegradable means on a box
The FTC Green Guides say an unqualified degradable claim should only be made if the whole item will break down in a reasonably short time after normal disposal. Most swabs end up in a landfill, where conditions slow breakdown, so a broad biodegradable claim deserves a second look.
A compostable claim is more specific, and it should say whether the swab needs a commercial facility. A certification mark and an exact description tell you more than a general green word.
Do not flush them
Swabs belong in the trash, not the toilet. Wastewater agencies ask people not to flush items such as swabs, wipes and floss, because they can collect in pipes and screens. This applies to paper-stick swabs as well.
A note on ear use
The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery advises against putting swabs or other objects in the ear canal. If you have a question about earwax or ear comfort, ask your doctor.
How to choose
Our bamboo cotton swabs guide explains how to read the label and compare by cost per swab.
- Check the stick material on the box (paper, bamboo or plastic).
- Read the exact wording on any biodegradable or compostable claim.
- Compare the cost per swab, since packs vary in count.
